The Winterizing of Your Lawn Sprinkler System

The yards of so many American households are dry and brown. Installing a lawn sprinkler system at your Blaine or neighboring towns’ home is an awesome way to get your grass and plants the proper amount of water required to ensure green, healthy growth. A lawn sprinkler system as installed by Classic Lawnscape will see to it that water is distributed evenly across your lawn. Not only that, but you can set automatic watering to unfold at specific times.

For those of us enjoying colder climates, there is an annual need to “winterize” your sprinkler system. With autumn all but here for Minnesotans, we may as well begin thinking about this now as the cold is almost here for its long, annual deep freeze.

To winterize a lawn sprinkler system, we must follow a few simple steps before the cold months set in to try to make sure that your system is ready to roll next spring. Freezing temperatures do ample damage to a lawn sprinkler system that still has water in the pipes that feed it so winterizing will help you avoid potential costly repairs.

When you call on Classic Lawnscape to handle your winterizing needs, we will follow these important steps to winterize your sprinkler system:

  • First, we will turn off the water that feeds your lawn sprinkler system. After locating the master shut-off valve (which should be located within your basement/lower level) we will be actively preventing water from massing within your pipes.
  • Next, we determine whether or not you have automatic or manual valves in your sprinkler system. Once this is determined, we drain the remaining water from the sprinkler system. Your hose bib will be pried open to allow free flow. A bucket will catch all of the water that runs from your pipes.
  • An air compressor will be employed to drain the overall network. After choosing the area of your lawn that is furthest out from your home, we will work our way back in towards it. Your sprinklers will run for two to three minutes, allowing all water to drain properly. Once the water switches over from mist to just air kicking out, we move on to the next one, and so forth.

We will see this process through the last sprinkler and you are winterized! A time-consuming and mundane process, call on us to help!
